Paulus (Paavali) Juusteen was the bishop of
Finland in 1563-1576. He was a famous man,and although I do not know your
religion, it might be of interest that Paavali Juusteen studied in
Wittenberg, Germany in the 1543-47 and his teacher there was Martin Luther
himself! (as were also Philip Melanchton and Paul Eber). Paavali Juusteen
was in the 1570-ties a member of the Swedish peace delegation to Russia, but
in Moscow Grand Duke Ivan the IV (Ivan the Cruel as we call him) arrested
all the delegates and put them in jail for three years and tortured them.
When Paavali returned home he was raised to the nobility,and because he had
so badly been tortured in the Russia, he took for his coat of arms a figure
of man who is whipped.
