Notes for Erik Ruuth
1754-1761 RK p 146 Kerisalo “1735” “Son Erik” (listed below Anders, born 1713, not below Erik, born 1697 (and there was space in the list to list more children of Erik). There is no record of any church attendance before 1761. It is possible that “1735” is an error for the birth date or that he is the son of Anders, with perhaps, an earlier spouse.

1762-1773 RK p 171 Hosiaranda “son” (of Anders Ruuth and Catharina Nykäin)” last church attendance was on 12Feb1764 “gift i Randasalmi” (no birth year recorded, but it would seem to be intermediate to 1741 and 1748)

an e-mail of 26dec2000....
the maiden name of the mother of my mother's grandfather was Maria Helena Ruuth
(also: Maria Leena or Maija Leena). She was born in Mikkeli surroundings
(maalaiskunta) 22.5.1830 and died 29.10.1910. Her father the farmer Erkki Ruuth was born 11.1.1802 in Rantasalmi, Teemassalo 9. His father the farmer Abraham Ruuth was born 1.7.1774 in Rantasalmi, Osikonmäki. His father Erkki was from Joroinen. I don't know his date of birth.

I would be interested to learn the facts that Your studies about the Ruuth
family in Joroinen have revealed.

Yours faithfully,
Rauno Seppänen

Erik Ruthin tila Tuusjärvi no 1 ja sen historia

Erik Ruth was born in an estate (rustholli) of Southern Savo, Joronen, Kerisalo. At his 1. marriage he moved to the estate of Rantasalmi, Osikonmäki, owned by his spouse's Forsman family. After death of spouse in 1786 he moved (Matti Räsänen, Tuusniemen pitäjänkirja, Pieksämäki 2000, s. 41 ('Tuusniemi parish book') from Osikonmäki with his young sons Adam and Peter in 1790 to Northern Savo, Tuusniemi, Tuusjärvi.

Ruth and his Forsman brothers-in-law bought the entire Ruth's estate Tuusjärvi of 1 500 hectares, Tuusjärvi no 1, which was later divided into Old Ruuttula and New Ruttula. The former stayed in the Ruth family until 1873 and the latter until 1879.

The background of the Ruths being studied as estate owners (rusthollari) in Joroinen, Kerisalo

Professor Kauko Pirisen's book Savon historia II:1 (Pieksämäki 1982, s. 214, 'History of Savo' vol. II:1) tells that Joroinen's Kerisalo became an estate first owned by Henrik Laurinpoika (Larsson), after his death by his spouse and after that by the two sons of the spouses. The longer-lived of those sons died in 1650. At least during the ownership period of the widow, armed rider service for the estate was carried out by a Sigfrid Pentinpoika (Bengtsson). According to Pirinen, offspring to Sigfrid acquired ownership to at least part of the early Kerisalo estate. This offspring adopted the name Ruth. Details of this are so far unknown. Yet it is known that at least until 1736 there were nobility estates in Kerisalo and that an important one of these was sold by the last owners, the v. Meurman family, to a Kiempe in 1736.

(Pertti Ahonen does not agree that Erik is the son of Anders)
Dear David,

As to the 1st annex of your message, yes, I am acquainted with the very page you submit. Yet I cannot be sure that the Erik b. 1735 is of the Ruths (although I am quite confident that he still indeed is). The problem with the old "rippikirjat" including those regarding the Ruths is that they do not indicate the family name (if any was used) for all people all the time. Instead, they often only indicate people's names and possibly their father's names. Yet of course the matter is worth my further consideration.

I remain confident that there was an Erik Ruth whom I indicated with the dates b. 1743, d. 1815. I looked at the birth records of the Joroinen parish for 1743 but found that they are so patchy that obviously most of them have perished over the years, such as burned, rotten, stolen or drown etc., as not rarely happened.

As to the 2nd annex of your message (1762-1773 RK, Hosiaranda), I am also aware of the Huosiaisranta records with an Erik Ruth. It is impossible to read the word before the name of the Erik indicated in the page you sent. However, it looks to me that it is not "son" I (DJ) DO NOT AGREE. It would not be exceptional if the Erik Ruth, for which no birth year is indicated in that record and who moved to Rantasalmi as the Erik I see as b. 1743 and d. 1815, would have served for some time in the farm of a relative, in this case a farm in which Anders Ruth b. 1713 was the "isäntä", the head of the family.

I do have as I understand you have many observations on different birth dates indicated for the same person. Yet eight years - 1735 vs. 1743 - are rather many. (I have seen errors of 10 years (DJ))

Obviously, there is all reason for me to continue with the same dilemma.

The very best,

Pertti
