Notes for Martti Jordan
from Tuula (os. Jordan): Heikki Jordan from Virtasalmi said that the word Ahvenis is
somehow familiar. He called to his friend who lives in Joroinen and this man
told that there is a place in Joroinen, not a village but a place, few houses,
called Ahvenisto. Heikki told that it is near the place where the Jordan
family has lived in Joroinen. And the reason for that why the Jordan family
has lived in Joroinen is that it is very near Rantasalmi and the place
Haapaniemi, where the Military school (Haapaniemen Kadettikoulu) situated and the
first Jordan in Finland was the soldier who came from Germany.
There is one history researcher in Finland ( Mr. A.R.Alho) who has wrote a
lot about von Jordans. Some other researchers say that he doesn't always
see difference between facts and fiction, but nevertheless, that is the
main source of information about von Jordans.
Some other sources of information are Jully Ramsay's "Frälsesläkter i
Finland" and Tom Carpelan's "Ättartavlor".
There are Marten Jordans in Kerimäki in later years

In the list of Finnish genealogists I found a person who has studied Jordan
family from Rantasalmi from 1700 -. His name is Pauli Ikonen and his
mailing address is:
Taivaanpankontie 1 A 27, 70200 Kuopio, Finland, tel +358 17 2820264.
I also called to him and he told me that Jordan family comes from
Rantasalmi and many of them have been handicraftsmen. There is no certain
knowledge of the origin of name Jordan - it can be a real family name or a
soldier name. In my opinion Jordan is not a typical soldier name. Mr
Ikonen told me that it is said that the first Jordan possibly came from
Germany to Savonlinna (Olofsborg - a castle) during the 30-year war in the
17th century.
Mr. Ikonen is a lawyer and he promised that if you write to him he can
tell you what he knows about Jordan-family. One of his ancestors belongs to
that family. He says:” our name Jordan was earlier Jordanus, perhaps Jordanius. Names with -us or -ius means that the person had studied. Perhaps the first of our Jordans was an official, not a soldier.” “the Finnish name book says that the old Germanic name Jornandes changed in Finland to Jordan.” “in the Middle Ages in Turku, Viipuri, Kivennapa and Häme, the name Jordan was used.”
I have thoroughly searched through the 1469 pages of the 1848-59 Rantasalmi rk, part 1-3 for Jordans at SLC April 1999. don’t do it again
There were no Jordan taxpayers in Savonlinna province in 1571..acc to the list found on the web. Rantasalmi and Sääminki were at that time part of Savonlinna
