from the IGI, his family name was Weide previous to his becoming a soldier.. how did he keep the name? Was his father also a soldier? YES
Matts apparently has a brother Michel, married to Walborg Hämälain. They had children in Hetamäki, 1785, Michel; Kyrchoby, 1787, Anna; Kyrchoby, 1791, Eva; Palocki, 1795, Elizabeth. I have searched for births in the Kopiot years 1779 to1798.

Anna Weide born 27.7.1787 for whom the note reads:" absolv 16.3.1811". p 98 of RK. In 1822 in Jäppilä, with husband Abrah. Jäppinen, an Anna Weide, age 35, has a son Abraham.
On 2.10.1816 in Karjala,Pieksämäki. a drg. Michel Veide is father to illegitimate son Johan, whose mother was a soldier's widow Eva Poyhain, age 30.
in 1823 an Elizabeth Weide, age 24, and Jacob Jäppin have son Adam in Jäppilä/Pieksämäki
no females of this surname were noticed as being parents during these years.
in Pieksäm. 1756-61, find no Weides born. look in Kangasniemi or Hangasalmi.
Apparently Adam was the last child, in Pieksäm. at least up to 1807.

An Eva Weide, born 1758 and married to Matts (Gager?) Laitin lives in Hankasalmi in 1800, dies in 1808; with her lives Brita Weide, born 1772, who goes to Rautalampi about 1815 (from Hankasalmi RK of 1806-1817). also in Hankasalmi at 1800 is Christ. Vaitin, born 1781. In 1792 in Niinimäki, Mäntyharju, Eric Wid and Lisa Rahikain have child Maria. In Lahnaniemi, Mäntyharju in 1824, Valborg Ericsdr Wid marries.
